Sean R. List

Sean is a partner and founder of Lehmann Major List, PLLC. He specializes in firearms law, employment law, and criminal defense. Since 2021, Sean has held the position of Special Counsel to the Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He is a graduate of the Daniel Webster Scholar Program at the University of New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce School of Law. He has successfully tried multiple jury trials in both state and federal courts.

Sean represents federally licensed firearms dealers and manufacturers in a variety of compliance, liability, employment, and general business matters. He also represents individuals who have been criminally charged in cases related to firearms, deadly weapons and self-defense. Sean is regularly consulted regarding federal and state firearm regulation, National Firearms Act compliance, the classification of firearms according to ATF definitions, private and over-the-counter firearm transfers, the effect of convictions/mental health admissions on firearm ownership eligibility, the mechanics of firearms, justifiable use of force and firearm display issues.

Sean represents employees in a variety of case types including wrongful termination, whistleblower, discrimination, sexual harassment, contract dispute and wage claims. In addition to litigating employment cases in state and federal courts, Sean has represented parties at the NH Commission for Human Rights, US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, NH Department of Labor, NH Employment Security and the National Labor Relations Board.

Sean is a regular lecturer on the topics of employment litigation, state and federal gun laws, and legal use of force/self-defense. He has sat on multiple teaching panels for other lawyers, has lectured to various trade organizations, and regularly teaches firearms seminars at various shooting ranges, training facilities and businesses throughout the State. Sean is also a certified pistol and rifle instructor. He shoots competitively and is an avid hunter and firearm collector.

Sean regularly testifies in the New Hampshire Legislature on a variety of legal subject matters.

Sean was formerly a partner at Backus, Meyer & Branch, LLP, a prominent employment firm in Manchester, NH. Prior to that, Sean was an associate at Douglas, Leonard & Garvey in Concord, NH.

Durgin v. State Farm- Docket., Case No. 2014-CV-00125 (Merrimack Cty. Superior Court, 2015) (Verdict in favor of an insured wrongfully accused of arson- claim covered and insurer liable for attorneys’ fees)

Fortin v. Hollis-Brookline School District, et al., Case No 15-CV-179-JL (U.S. District Court, N.H., 2017)(Verdict in favor of Plaintiff with District required to pay $280,000.00 in damages)

Cowhig v. Megastore Auto Group, Inc. et al., Case No 1:16-CV-00515-PB, (U.S. District Court, N.H., 2018)(Verdict in favor of Plaintiff with Defendant liable for more than $250,000.00 in Plaintiff’s damages, attorneys’ fees and costs)

Ryan Hardy et al. v. Chester Arms, LLC et al., Case No 218-2018-CV-828, (Rockingham County Superior Court, 2022)- (Obtained judgment on behalf of FFL client who was sued by two police officers for negligent entrustment in a case supported by national anti-gun group Brady United.  Officers were shot by a third-party who had purchased a firearm several weeks earlier from FFL.  Attorney List proved FFL followed all legal requirements pertaining to sale and had no knowledge of risk to public safety or criminal intent, achieving a complete victory for FFL.)
